WakeMed: Producing Future Healthcare Providers

WakeMed Internal Medicine Residency Program — is a categorical community-based hospital program with 15 residents at full complement. We accept five residents each year through the National Resident Matching Program. WakeMed received ACGME accreditation for our own residency program in 2020, but we have been a participating site for residency training for over 45 years.

Today, WakeMed is the largest off-campus teaching site for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Graduate Medical Education programs through an education affiliation that has been in place for decades. Many physicians in the local community have graduated from medical education programs at UNC and Duke. Almost all of the 50 residents at WakeMed hail from UNC with a few from Duke University. In addition, the WakeMed-Raleigh community serves as a clinical campus for many Campbell University medical and PA students.

Medical students and PA students complete over 400 months of education in our hospital system per year. WakeMed offers residency programs for Internal MedicinePharmacy and Surgical Physician Assistants. Teaching physicians are faculty at UNC, Duke, and Campbell.

WakeMed is a Major Teaching Institution providing residencies and teaching programs approved by the AMA's Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

  • Emergency Medicine
  • General and Trauma Surgery
