It takes a special person to be a volunteer, and we're glad that you've chosen to share your time and talents with the patients and staff at WakeMed. The time you spend here as a volunteer benefits the entire community. As a volunteer, your role is one of ambassador, liaison and educator for patients, families, visitors and the public.
WakeMed and its patients have been fortunate to have strong volunteer support from the community since 1961, and we believe that volunteers are a vital element in our effort to provide quality care for our patients. Countless hours as well as dollars have been contributed by dedicated volunteers and their families over the years.
Frequently Asked Questions — All Volunteers
WakeMed volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of six months of service. Because WakeMed provides screening, orientation and training for volunteers, we are unable to accommodate short-term volunteer commitments.
No. WakeMed does not offer summer-only volunteer placements. Applicants must be able to meet the minimum six-month commitment.
Yes. Volunteers must be available to serve one day each week on a regular, set day and time. Weekend opportunities are limited.
No. Applicants should apply to only one hospital location. Additional hospital assignments may be considered after you begin volunteering.
No. Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance or placement. Applications are reviewed based on program requirements and current volunteer openings.
The application process may take approximately three to five weeks. Applicants who are selected must complete the required interview and onboarding steps before beginning volunteer service.
Yes. All new volunteers must receive clearance from WakeMed Occupational Health before beginning service and must meet applicable health and vaccination requirements.
No. WakeMed Volunteer Services does not accept applications for court-ordered community service hours.
Yes. Volunteer Services can provide verification of volunteer hours served.
No. WakeMed volunteer assignments are service opportunities that support patients, families, visitors and staff. Individuals seeking job shadowing or internship opportunities should refer to the appropriate WakeMed student or Workforce Development resources.
Our volunteers are assigned a shift once a week and the shift is with 2 to 4 hours long. Therefore, volunteers are only guaranteed 8 to 16 hours in a month. Can a volunteer do more hours? Yes, but open shifts are not guaranteed and vary widely for each department.
