Hospitalist Medicine

The hospitalist medicine fellowship track was launched in October of 2022 and consists of board- certified internists. Alongside a robust APP hospitalist team, the hospitalist service provides excellent collaborative care to patients at the Raleigh, Cary and North campuses of WakeMed.

The group has a long-standing history of working in a collaborative fashion with APP’s and other consultants within the WakeMed system and providing excellent patient care. The physicians and APPs of the groups are also dedicated to education and the APP fellow can expect to train alongside a diverse group of both medical residents and students from both UNC and Campbell University.

Our hospital medicine APP fellowship program is an intense, highly structured, comprehensive program designed to give you exposure to all the different areas of hospital medicine. We will provide a large volume of patient care experiences, selected lectures, simulations and professional development sessions. Our goal is to use evidence-based medicine through a mix of didactic and clinical experiences to help you develop the specialized skills needed across the continuum of patient care.

This fellowship is designed for self-motivated, eager, and knowledgeable new advanced practice provider graduates who excelled in their previous APP training and now wish to build upon those skills to take them to the next level in hospital medicine through our high acuity program. The fellow will learn all aspects of hospital medicine using many educational modalities. The variety of strategies will teach how to assess, diagnose, and treat common medical conditions using the latest guidelines. Fellows can expect to attend lectures and learning sessions throughout this one-year program.

We will provide you with the framework to become a highly successful, independent advanced practice provider. The fellows will receive strong mentorship from APP preceptors, fellow advisors, and physicians.

Hospitalist Medicine Curriculum Overview

The APP fellow can expect to be fully integrated into the hospitalist team during the year-long fellowship program. The curriculum will include a clinical focus on management of a wide variety of medical conditions in a multitude of settings including the emergency department and medical/surgical floors at all three campuses in the triangle.

The curriculum will include core rotations with both the hospitalist team where they will be responsible for assisting with admissions from the emergency department, performing consults on inpatients, rounding on inpatients and arranging for appropriate discharges of patients on their service.

Throughout the year the fellow should show appropriate progression of history taking and physical examination skills, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests and interpretation of data, forming a differential diagnosis and other appropriate technical skills.

Didactic Opportunities

The fellow will have multiple opportunities to further their didactic knowledge through various conferences, educational lectures and in-services, one-on-one education, mentoring, monthly professional development days, and access to the state in the art SIM lab at WakeMed. The fellow will also be involved in a quality improvement project during the year. BLS and ACLS certifications are provided.
