Program Goals and Objectives

By the end of the residency program, residents will:

  • Be proficient general internists, providing exceptional patient care that is sensitive to a diverse patient population and applying knowledge, skills and abilities in the diagnosis and management of medical conditions that represent the spectrum of internal medicine diagnoses.
  • Use their knowledge to formulate diagnostic and therapeutic plans, demonstrating an awareness of risks, benefits, costs, patient preferences and ethical and psychosocial dimensions while considering the impact of social determinants on health, systemic health disparities and the needs of vulnerable populations.
  • Function as part of an extraordinary team of healthcare professionals, communicating effectively and demonstrating respect, compassion and integrity as well as an openness to learn from ongoing feedback, emerging medical research and professional standards.
  • Advocate for quality patient care and optimal patient care systems by gaining proficiency in continuous quality improvement methodology and tools.

  • We provide the opportunity to practice medicine in dynamic and clinically active community-based inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • We present a multidisciplinary curriculum with faculty who are employed by WakeMed, in private practice or employed by a university.
  • One-on-one training is available by skilled primary care physicians, hospitalists and subspecialty faculty.
  • Practice and research opportunities are included in the Medical Simulation Center and Clinical Research Institute, respectively.
  • Receive intensive ambulatory experience at WakeMed clinics.
  • We have an affiliation with the NC AHEC Program.
    • The NC AHEC Program provides and supports educational activities and services with a focus on primary care in rural communities and those with less access to resources to recruit, train and retain the workforce needed to create a healthy North Carolina.
