PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program Internal Medicine

The PGY2 Internal Medicine Residency at WakeMed Health & Hospitals is an ASHP-accredited program that provides residents with the experience and knowledge necessary to become competent practitioners in internal medicine. Residents will play key role in developing pharmacotherapy plans for patients as part of multidisciplinary teaching rounds.

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

The resident will focus on the following objectives:

  • Provide exceptional patient care and unsurpassed service as a part of internal medicine teaching teams
  • Critically evaluate published literature to create and redesign evidence-based pharmacotherapeutic regimens
  • Provide drug information and identify opportunities to contribute to the body of medical literature
  • Develop leadership and practice management skills within and outside of the institution
  • Participate in clinical research, medication use evaluations and performance improvement projects focused on pharmacotherapy
  • Develop collaborative relationships with members of the multi-disciplinary patient care team
  • Identify opportunities to improve patient and/or provider quality and safety
  • Provide experiential training and/or education to health care professionals, including medical and pharmacy learners
  • Present research and/or provide education at a professional conference

Application Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Licensure/eligibility for licensure in North Carolina
  • Completing or completion of an ASHP-accredited or ASHP-candidate status PGY1 Pharmacy Residency
  • Exceptional knowledge, communication skills, and leadership qualities

Qualified candidates will be invited for an on-site or virtual interview.

Interview structure may vary from year to year.

  • Internal Medicine Series
    • Internal Medicine I (external candidates only)
    • Internal Medicine II: Internal Medicine with Teaching
    • Internal Medicine III: Advanced Internal Medicine
    • Internal Medicine IV: Precepting
  • Cardiology Transitions of Care
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Clinical Administration (anticoagulation focused)

Elective Rotations:

  • Psychiatry
  • Pediatrics
  • Medical/surgical ICU
  • Cardiac ICU
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Ambulatory Care
  • Oncology (outpatient)
  • Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability.

Longitudinal Rotations: 

  • Administration and Practice Management
  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Service as a decentralized clinical pharmacist
    • Every 3rd weekend
    • 1 major and 1 minor holiday
    • Approximately 12 additional service days throughout the year

Additional Required Activities:

  • Complete and present a residency research project at a conference
  • Participate in a formal mentorship program
  • Attend Pharmacy in Leadership Series (PILS)
  • Prepare a manuscript suitable for publication
  • Present an ACPE-accredited continuing education program
  • Develop a drug monograph, class review, or policy update

Additional Optional Activities:

  • Teaching certificate program
  • Serve as a teaching assistant
  • Serve as a mentor for pharmacy learners
  • Additional presentation opportunities, including medicine resident lectures

  • Estimated stipend $55,000
