PGY1 Pharmacy Residency – Pediatric Setting

The WakeMed Health & Hospitals PGY1 Pharmacy Residency in the Pediatric Setting builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residency.

This 52-week postgraduate training experience is designed to develop the following core competencies:

Requirements

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Licensure/eligibility for licensure in North Carolina
  • Exceptional knowledge, communication skills, and leadership qualities

Qualified candidates will be invited for an on-site interview or virtual interview. Interview structure may vary from year to year.

Learning Experiences & Required Activities

Rotational experiences for the PGY1 residency program at WakeMed and the WakeMed Children’s Hospital are designed to provide our residents with a broad exposure to pharmacy practice and patient populations. Notably, the PGY1 residency program at WakeMed Health & Hospitals offers a wide variety of learning experiences and flexibility in scheduling.

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Cardiology
  • PICU II
  • NICU II
  • General Pediatrics II
  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
  • Cardiothoracic Surgical Critical Care
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Surgery Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU)
  • Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability

Longitudinal Experiences:

  • Optional teaching certificate program
  • Service as a decentralized clinical pharmacist
    • Every 3rd weekend + 1 weekday evening shift
    • 1 major and 1 minor holiday
    • Approximately 12 additional service days throughout the year

Additional Required Activities:

  • Complete and present a residency research project at a regional conference
  • Prepare a manuscript suitable for publication
  • Complete Medication Use Evaluation(s)
  • Present an ACPE-approved continuing education program
  • Participate in the formal mentorship program and Pharmacy in Leadership Series (PILS)
