Hospital-Based CPE
The hospital-based unit offers students the opportunity to provide spiritual care to patients, families, and staff within the setting of a major Medical Center. Students serve as the Chaplain for a specific clinical area in addition to on-call rotations and Saturday and Sunday assistance with spiritual care consults on a rotating basis. Students have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary health care rounds with medical staff on their assigned clinical unit.
Prison and Hospital-Based CPE
Chaplaincy comes in many forms. This unique unit offers students the opportunity to experience both health care chaplaincy and prison chaplaincy. Students in this program will provide spiritual care through both the NC Department of Adult Corrections (NCDAC) and WakeMed Health & Hospitals. In hospitals, students serve as chaplain interns, providing spiritual care to patients, families and staff. With the NCDAC, students will serve as the chaplain intern to inmates as well as staff. In both settings, students will be mentored by staff chaplains who can speak to their areas of expertise, whether health care chaplaincy or prison chaplaincy.
