Program Summary

The WakeMed Internal Medicine Residency Program is a categorical community-based hospital program with 15 residents at full complement. We accept five residents each year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) (code 2275140C0). Prospective students should apply through ERAS. WakeMed received ACGME accreditation (number 1403600332) for our own residency program in 2020, but we have been a participating site for residency training for over 50 years.

One-on-One Faculty Instruction

one-on-one faculty instructionThe limited number of participants in our program allows each resident to have a high level of interaction with attending physicians as well as hands-on access to patient care. One-on-one faculty instruction is offered by a diverse group of dedicated physicians with a wide breadth of experience. By providing opportunities for residents to develop strong diagnostic, treatment and bedside skills, we aim to train community leaders focused on compassionate care.

Resident-Centered Program Curriculum

Our three-year training program has a structured core curriculum, as well as elective rotations. Residents learn a broad range of skills, focusing on primary care and subspecialty medicine. A robust series of electives (24 weeks of elective study over the three-year program) allow the resident to gain a broad scope of experience.

The program offers opportunities to learn in an environment that develops the generalist skills necessary to enter a community-based practice or a hospitalist career with significant exposure to subspecialty medicine for those interested in fellowship training.

Clinic Experience and Protected Didactic Time

Residents train in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, utilizing a 4+2 block schedule. This allows for an uninterrupted clinic experience and ensures protected time for quality improvement and research projects.

Didactic Time:

  • Morning Report
  • Grand Rounds
  • Specialty-Specific Lectures
  • Journal Club
  • Tumor Board
  • Morbidity and Mortality Conference
