Strategic Combination Perspectives
The proposed combination between WakeMed and Atrium Health has sparked discussion and conversation across Wake County and North Carolina. Here, we have asked members of our WakeMed family to join the conversation and share their perspectives on what this combination means for the patients, family and community we serve.

"WakeMed is a mission driven organization. This mission – to provide the highest quality of care for all we serve regardless of means and circumstance – is the lens through which all decisions are made. A strategic combination with Atrium Health is the clearest path we have found to ensure our mission endures well into the future. Our shared commitment to compassionate service, community well-being and, most importantly, care for all, forms the cornerstone of our mission's future."

"Partnering with a system like Atrium Health, who shares our same passion for access to all who need it, will allow us the stability to continue to provide excellent care for all who need it. WakeMed isn’t failing—it’s just the opposite. We are thriving and that is why now is the perfect time to capitalize on that momentum to drive us into the next era of care for all within our community and beyond."
- Michael Ferguson, MD, ENT Physician & Director of WakeMed ENT - Head & Neck Surgery

"WakeMed’s mission of improving the health and well-being of our community with outstanding and compassionate care for all, will not only be sustained, but will be enhanced by the combination with Atrium Health. In joining a broader network of clinical care, our physicians and care teams will be supported by greater resources, as well as new collaborative efforts across specialties and regions for learning, clinical advancements, program development, innovation, and participation in research."
- Seth Brody, MD, MPH WakeMed Chief Physician Executive and OB-GYN
"What's so exciting about the strategic combination is that it validates something that we've believed at WakeMed for a long time – that transforming mental health care takes scale, it takes innovation and really strong partnerships. WakeMed has a very intentional focus on community partnerships and elevating dignity, autonomy, and patient-centered care…This is about bringing together two organizations that share a deep commitment to community-based care and innovation, and also reaching underserved populations. There's a strong alignment in how we think about care, especially around serving those who need us most. And that's where this partnership could make a real difference for our community."
