RALEIGH, N.C. (August 30, 2022) – Today marks the opening of WakeMed Hematology & Medical Oncology, an outpatient practice for comprehensive cancer care and personalized treatments built upon the existing imaging, pathology, surgical and procedural services currently provided in a vast array of clinical specialties at WakeMed. The disease-focused practice provides care for all types of cancer and the full-spectrum of hematology disorders, while providing subspecialty services in thoracic, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and breast oncology.

The new practice is part of WakeMed Cancer Care, a multidisciplinary team committed to enhancing greater access and expanding the delivery of both inpatient and outpatient oncology care and services in Wake County. This is a significant stride in WakeMed’s mission of improving the health and well-being of the community by meeting the growing cancer care needs – from diagnosis to treatment and recovery – and providing the right treatment and support to patients when they need it.

“Each person’s cancer experience is unique. And so are our patients,” said Vijay Chaudhary, MD, Chief of Oncology for WakeMed Cancer Care. “There is a vulnerability that often comes with a cancer diagnosis, and that is why we work to understand every aspect of a patient’s condition. There is life with, without and beyond cancer. Our goal is to comfort, reassure and provide the personalized, precision-based care and caring that lead to healing.”

Patients will receive care coordinated by oncology nurse navigators along with support and recovery services in a healing environment from oncology certified nurses, dietitians, cancer genetics counselors, social workers, occupation/rehabilitation therapists, behavioral therapists and financial navigators.

WakeMed Hematology & Medical Oncology is based at the Raleigh Medical Park, located at 23 Sunnybrook Road (Suite 220) across from WakeMed Raleigh Campus. In addition to on-site infusion treatments, the practice offers an array of cancer care and hematology services including chemotherapy, laboratory and pathology services, outpatient pharmacy and full-service imaging capabilities.

Along with Dr. Vijay Chaudhary, the WakeMed Hematology & Medical Oncology physician team includes Dr. Praveen Namireddy and Dr. Bilal Khalid. The practice will welcome additional oncology specialists this fall, further adding to WakeMed’s depth and breadth of experience in high-quality, comprehensive cancer care. The introduction of WakeMed Hematology & Medical Oncology strengthens the health system’s existing cancer surgery expertise and expands WakeMed’s ability to deliver a seamless continuum of cancer care for the community.
