About Me

Dr. James Merritt Edwards is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician with clinical interests in the effects of maternal infection and medical complications on the developing baby and newborn.

After completing medical school in 2010, Dr. Edwards began his residency at Duke University Medial Center in Obstetrics and Gynecology, serving as administrative chief resident for one year. He continued his training with a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. During this time, he was actively involved in research, leading several research projects related to women and pregnancy.

As a Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician, Dr. Edwards sees women who have high-risk pregnancies, and he aims to treat each patient as an individual. His goal is to inform and educate each patient about their conditions and risks so they can make the best decisions for themselves and their families.

After having a scare during our anatomy scan at our regular OBGYN and being told our baby was missing a brain structure, Dr. Edwards went above and beyond for us. Despite being fully booked, he worked us in the very next day. From the moment we met him, he was kind, compassionate, and incredibly thorough—he took the time to explain everything clearly and made us feel at ease during such a stressful time.

His expertise and his sonographer’s skill also led to identifying two other minor findings, which we will continue to monitor with him throughout this pregnancy. As a NICU nurse for the past 3.5 years, I know the possible complications and my anxiety was high, but Dr. Edwards’ calm, professional approach gave me much-needed reassurance.

We will absolutely continue to follow him for the remainder of this pregnancy and for any future pregnancies. I truly wish all providers practiced with the same level of compassion, dedication, and excellence as Dr. Edwards. I am so thankful for his care during this time.

While I do feel like he was sugar-coating my pregnancy complication and he left out the complication that could happen during delivery, I will say that I loved his bedside manner and he didn’t rush us at all. We were able to ask as many questions as we wanted and he explained it all well.
