WakeMed Doula Labor Support Services
WakeMed now offers specially trained and credentialed doulas to assist women through the labor process. These doulas are among the most experienced in the field and available as a service to expecting and laboring moms at all three of our WakeMed birthing facilities – Raleigh Campus, Cary Hospital and North Women’s Hospital.
The Role of Doulas Doulas provide emotional, educational and physical support for families before, during and immediately after the birth. They work with the nurses and physicians, and facilitate communication between the healthcare team, the patient and the family members at the time of the birth. Doulas do not perform clinical or medical tasks, such as fetal heart tone checks, or postpartum clinical care.
During labor, doulas can provide comfort with pain relief techniques, such as breathing, relaxing, massage and laboring positions. When medications are administered during labor, doulas provide information, emotional support, and comfort measures. When a mom experiences an unplanned cesarean birth, doulas provide support and encouragement.
Doulas act as an advocate for the mother, helping to follow or incorporate changes into the birth plan as needed, and enhancing communication between the mother and health care provider, ensuring she has a positive and safe birth. They never take the place of the father or support person, but are there to complement and enhance their experience.
Benefits of Doulas Studies have shown that when a doula is present during labor, moms need fewer interventions, less pain medication and have shorter labors. Moms also reported having a more positive childbirth experience.
