Primary Care Fellowship

About the WakeMed Primary Care Fellowship

With its initial inception in October of 2021, the Primary Care fellowship is an intense, highly structured, comprehensive program designed to give you exposure to all the different areas of primary care. We will provide a large volume of patient care experiences, selected lectures, simulations and professional development sessions. Our goal is to use evidence-based medicine through a mix of didactic and clinical experiences to help you develop the specialized skills needed across the continuum of patient care.

This fellowship is designed for self-motivated, eager, and knowledgeable new advanced practice provider graduates who excelled in their previous APP training and now wish to build upon those skills to take them to the next level. The variety of strategies will teach how to assess, diagnose, and treat both chronic conditions, along with providing an environment for the fellow to learn how to diagnose and treat acute primary care conditions. Fellows can expect to attend lectures and learning sessions throughout this one-year program.

We will provide you with the framework to become a highly successful, independent advanced practice provider. The fellows will receive strong mentorship from APP preceptors, fellow advisors, and physicians. By utilizing a select few of our primary care locations, along with potential electives, the APP fellow can expect to see a wide range of medical conditions and be afforded a multitude of learning experiences.

Core Rotations

The primary care track is one year in length and the fellow can expect to rotate through a select few of our primary care locations, along with having the ability to participate in a variety of electives during their year.

Progression

The fellow will be expected to show appropriate progression throughout their year by showing advancement in history and physical examination skills, managing of chronic illnesses, diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses, ordering of appropriate laboratory tests and interpretation of those tests and development of differential diagnoses.

Didactic Opportunities

By working alongside one of our current team members the fellow can expect to receive excellent mentorship and didactic experiences during the fellowship. The fellow will also be able to participate in the various conferences and in-services throughout the year to further their knowledge base, along with a monthly professional development day. The fellow will also be involved in a quality improvement project throughout the year.
