WakeMed AmbulanceWakeMed's Mobile WakeMed’s Mobile Critical Care Services provide hospital-to-hospital transport for patients throughout our primary service area and surrounding region. Locally, we support

From ground transport to disaster preparedness and response, our team of highly trained professionals stands ready to serve at a moment's notice.

One of the state's busiest inter-facility transport services, WakeMed's comprehensive Critical Care Services, includes an impressive fleet of vehicles and transports an average of 2,200 ill or injured patients each month.

Basic Life Support

A Basic Life Support (BLS) division that transports non-emergent patients complements our Critical Care transport division. Whether the patient is being discharged from WakeMed to home or being transported to an offsite doctor's appointment, specialty medical treatment or skilled nursing facility, our highly trained staff is available to meet your needs.

Critical Care Division

Our critical care transport division is active around the clock 365 days a year. We have a robust staff and up-to-date transports:

  • A mixture of advanced life support ambulances, staffed by a paramedic and emergency medical technician (EMT)
  • Specialty care transport ambulances, staffed by a critical care paramedic, critical care nurse and EMT
  • Our fleet of skilled providers brings intensive care unit (ICU)-level care outside the hospital to wherever patients may be.

Disaster Readiness

In addition, Mobile Critical Care Services play a critical role in WakeMed's disaster readiness efforts, providing disaster scene assistance as well as patient care and support where it's needed the most. Our fleet of emergency response vehicles includes dedicated disaster response vehicles and specially trained disaster response personnel.

Pediatric Transport

The WakeMed Children's Transport Team works around the clock to bring pediatric and neonatal patients requiring specialized care to WakeMed from hospitals throughout the state. Our transport team, comprised of a pediatric nurse, a pediatric respiratory therapist and an EMT, provides specialized equipment, including oscillators, nitric administration and isolette transport for our smallest patients.

Communications & Dispatch

WakeMed Mobile Critical Care Services utilizes emergency telecommunicators from the WakeMed Emergency Communications Center for intake and dispatch of calls for service from WakeMed clinical units, regional medical facilities, regional flight services and regional 911 centers.

WakeMed telecommunicators arrange patient transport by ground and air for WakeMed and coordinate these transports with surrounding health care systems. These transports are categorized to provide the highest level of care from EMT through paramedics, registered nurses (RN), respiratory therapists (RT) and pediatric caregivers.
