Paul Michael Swaney, MD, MPH, FACOG

Dr. Paul Swaney is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist with clinical interests in treatment for a variety of gynecological problems, including fibroids, endometriosis and pelvic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction and abnormal uterine bleeding. When patient goals result in the need for surgical intervention, he focuses on promoting minimally invasive approaches, including hysteroscopic, transvaginal and robotic. Dr. Swaney provides routine and high-risk obstetric care, including prenatal care in the office and inpatient care for delivery or antepartum admissions. In the office, he offers a wide range of routine gynecological care, including screening exams, contraception and infertility/subfertility management.

Dr. Swaney is a fellow with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG). He went to North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC for undergraduate education. He attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC, for medical school and completed his residency in Wilmington, NC, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Prior to coming to WakeMed he was on the clinical faculty at East Carolina University and Duke University.

Dr. Swaney chose a focus on women’s health due to the emphasis on preventive medicine and long-term care. He emphasizes prevention and early detection of disease whenever possible to help keep patients healthy. Having a long-term relationship with patients makes it easier to work together to find treatments amenable to their lifestyles. Some issues can be very personal and have a large emotional impact. Therefore, Dr. Swaney strives to make patients comfortable at each encounter, so they can collaborate to improve their health.

Outside of work, Dr. Swaney enjoys spending time with family.
