About Me
Dr. Ashley Hink is board certified in general and surgical critical care. Her clinical focus is on the care of patients with traumatic injuries, burns and critical illness. Her research and programmatic experiences are focused on improving the care for traumatic injuries, injury and violence prevention and the mental health impacts of surviving trauma. She received extensive grant funding for this work, published her research in multiple surgical journals, started the first hospital violence intervention program (HVIP) in SC, and served on multiple national committees related to this field, including the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT).
Dr. Hink attended college at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. She then earned a master's degree in public health from Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and attended medical school at East Carolina Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, NC. She completed her general surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, and fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Prior to joining WakeMed, she was an associate professor of surgery at MUSC.
Dr. Hink values taking a humanistic and comprehensive approach to understanding and getting to know her patients, and aims to make all patients feel comfortable, heard, valued and respected. Creating an environment and care paradigm that promotes physical healing after traumatic injury in addition to supporting the emotional and social well-being of patients is incredibly important to her. She strongly believes in incorporating up-to-date evidence-based practices into her care and making shared decisions with patients and their families regarding the best available treatment approaches.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. Hink enjoys spending time with her family, including her daughter. She loves traveling to new places and doing outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, swimming and gardening. She also enjoys visual arts and music, frequenting art exhibits, festivals and concerts.
