Non-fixed tissue, products of conception (POC) or placental villus biopsy
Collection Container

Sterile container containing sterile Ringer's lactate or Hanks' balanced salt solution or transport medium provided by the laboratory.

 

Alternative Collection Container

If NO transport media is available, sterile isotonic saline in a sterile container can be used for transport. Do not use urine containers.

Storage or Stability
Ambient - Specimens should be sent to the laboratory IMMEDIATELY. Specimen may be refrigerated if there is a delay in shipment. Do not freeze.
Causes for Rejection
Upon receipt, suitability of specimen will be determined by the Cytogenetics laboratory.
Instructions

Aseptically obtain a small piece of tissue with subepidermal layers. Best results are obtained from placental villi, which remain viable much longer than fetal tissue. This is especially true in stillborn cases in which both cord blood and tissue samples are often not viable. If specimen is a product of conception, submit biopsies in a sterile tube with sterile Ringer's lactate, Hanks' balanced salt solution, or transport media. Gross contamination and necrotic tissue cannot be processed.
