'GI Pathogen Panel by PCR is the preferred test for parasites; it includes targets for Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia lamblia. Stool O&P should only be ordered when suspicion of parasitic infection is based on travel history in endemic areas, or when a patient is immunocompromised and parasites other than those on the GI Pathogen Panel by PCR are suspected.'

Causes for Rejection
Specimens in sterile container >1 hour old; QNS, specimen submitted on a diaper: only one vial submitted for any specimen type.
Note: This test requires both the PVA and Formalin vials.

Instructions
Transfer specimen to pink and grey ParaPak (PVA and Formalin) within one hour of collection and before delivery to the reference lab.
