Causes for Rejection
The first tube should not be used for culture as it may be contaminated.
Instructions
The physician will aseptically perform a lumbar puncture to obtain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Collect 2- 5 ml. of CSF in a sterile screw top container. Send the most turbid tube for culture. Otherwise, cultures will be performed on the second to last tube.
TAT
Cryptococcal antigen normally available STAT within 1 hour of receipt at Raleigh lab. Preliminary culture result at 7, 14, and 21 days. Final in 28 days.
