About Me

Dr. Phillips serves as the surgeon-in-chief of WakeMed Children's Hospital and the director of Pediatric Surgery for the physician practices of WakeMed Health & Hospitals.

He majored in Bioengineering and received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at San Diego. He earned his medical degree from the University of California at San Francisco and then completed his general surgery residency at the University of California - Los Angeles.

During his residency, he completed a two-year research fellowship and a clinical fellowship in ECMO (extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation) therapy of critically-ill neonates. He then completed a two-year clinical fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

Dr. Phillips was Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and Attending Surgeon at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles from 1995 to 1999. He developed a special interest in minimally-invasive surgical procedures in children, including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy, and was an instructor at multiple advanced pediatric laparoscopy courses.

Dr. Phillips moved to North Carolina in 1999. He was Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and Attending Surgeon at the North Carolina Children's Hospital from 1999 to 2010.

Dr. Phillips is board-certified in both General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery. He is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and in the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of multiple specialty societies, including American College of Surgeons, American Pediatric Surgical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, North Carolina Pediatric Society, International Pediatric Endosurgery Group, Chest Wall International Group, and Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons. He is married, with two children.

Doctor Phillips is outstanding in every way. I did not find out until I was sixty seven years old That I had poland syndrome. Doctor Phillips has been amazing in every way possible. Helping me understand what all my chest issues are and what we can do to help with. My ribs So that I have more room for my right lung. Titanium ribs sound great. Thank you I am so blessed

We were extremely impressed with WakeMed hospital overall. From the cooks to the janitors to the nursing staff, everyone was so friendly & seemed so happy. Dr Phillips is an amazing surgeon & we are so thankful for his expertise. Our nurse on 4E, Michelle, was superb. She was so attentive and caring. We drove from Greensboro, NC for this procedure for our son and are extremely grateful to Dr Phillips for his care in helping our son and easing our concerns about risks, etc. We would absolutely recommend Dr Phillips & his staff to anyone with a pectus issue. We are only 2 weeks out from surgery & already see a huge difference in our son in many ways. Thank you Dr Phillips for your compassionate care, knowledge & skill. We will forever be grateful for what you’ve done for our son & us.

I was very impressed the way Dr. Phillips would ask my son a question and patiently wait for him to sort out his thoughts and produce an answer of his own. Not many physicians do that with children on the spectrum and the kids end up not having to learn to express their feelings, or concerns and rely on parents to answer what the parent "thinks" the child is thinking.

While visiting WakeMed Children's Pediatric Surgery - Raleigh we thought it was one of the best experiences we've had with any doctor. The check in was quick and easy. The nurses were very kind. I cannot remember the nurse's name we worked with during our visit but she was very attentive our son. She was very engaging and even threw in a game for her and [NAME] to play to make him comfortable. Dr. Phillips was awesome as well. Our Peds doctor, Dr. [ ] recommended him and spoke very highly of him as well. He was very thorough + knowledgeable. He answered our questions and made us feel valued. I love how honest and upfront he was. I can tell that he was there to provide the best care possible. Overall our experience was amazing and I now know why Dr. [ ] loves Dr. Phillips - he is phenomenal & his team too.

Both of my boys come to this facility and it’s the best environment. The staff and doctors are exceptional and I feel extremely comfortable with everyone. Not only have I been a patient at times in my life, but I’ve worked in several medical offices and the care and team work at this facility is unmatched! I will never work in the medical field again, unless more offices begin conducting themselves in this manner. You guys really have something special, even if this behavior is mandated this is still an incredible feat! Thank you so very much! My children are more important to me than anything and to have them treated with care and respect means more than I am capable of expressing!
