Janely and Zuriel: Compliments for a Positive ENERGIZE! Experience
July 8, 2025
Thirteen-year-old Zuriel joined the WakeMed ENERGIZE! program from February to March 2025. His primary care provider encouraged his participation to help him learn about nutrition and become physically active. Zuriel learned how to read food labels and select healthy food alternatives. He also explored ideas for cooking meals and snacks and setting nutrition goals, such as eating fruits and vegetables and appropriately-sized portions. Zuriel discovered different exercises, group activities, how to use gym equipment and the importance of consistent activity. He most enjoyed meeting and connecting with other teens. He also loved spending time in the gym engaging in fun activities and learning how to be more active.
His mom, Janely, offers, "I learned how to better support Zuriel. I also extracted so much from the nutrition class where we were provided informational booklets to guide us toward better, sustainable choices. I found out what exercises and physical activities he liked most. Zuriel’s fitness and nutrition goals were inspiring. He successfully made lifestyle changes that included eating better and becoming more active."
Zuriel adds, “The coach and dietitian were very nice people. They were open, honest, kind and patient with all the kids.”
