Did you know "Kidney Stone Country" is a moniker for the southeastern region of the United States? Turns out, both men and women face a higher risk of developing painful kidney stones than in other parts of the United States. Experts point to several contributing factors, including chronic dehydration, hot and humid weather and a strong preference for sugary drinks (sweet tea comes to mind).
For Michelle Winings, that risk isn’t just a statistic — it’s been a recurring and painful reality for years.
"In April 2026, I experienced significant flank/kidney pain that quickly became difficult to ignore. For several weeks, I knew I likely had a stone and was hoping it would pass on its own; however, I was woken up at 3 am with acute kidney pain. Given my history of urosepsis, I knew I needed to seek medical attention quickly."
A History of Care
Michelle first met Ajaydeep Sidhu, MD, more than six years ago under challenging circumstances. What began as a urinary tract infection had rapidly escalated into urosepsis — a life-threatening condition that occurs when the infection spreads into the bloodstream and triggers a severe response throughout the body.
In one of the scariest seasons of her life, Dr. Sidhu took on her care following that incident, and he instantly became more than just her physician. He helped her fully recover and navigated the many kidney stone complications and health challenges that followed in the years ahead.
"I trust him, and I've remained in his care ever since."

The Kidney Stone that Wouldn't Pass
Fast forward to April 2026, and Michelle found herself back in crisis mode. Severe pain sent her rushing to the WakeMed North Emergency Department, where doctors quickly ordered a computed tomography (CT) scan to uncover the source of her symptoms.
The results revealed a right-sided kidney stone serious enough to require not only aggressive medical treatment, but surgery as well. As Michelle tried to process the news, the physician assistant (PA) walked her through the next step: she would need a stent — a procedure all too familiar in her long battle with kidney stones.
"The PA mentioned that Dr. Sidhu was at WakeMed North that day and would perform the procedure. Instantly, I felt relief. While stent placement wasn't ideal, knowing Dr. Sidhu was there, (unbeknownst to me) made me feel I was exactly where I needed to be and in very good hands."
In pre-op, Dr. Sidhu explained everything clearly to both Michelle and her husband. Knowing her medical history well, Michelle found his bedside manner, knowledge and expertise incredibly reassuring. He even personally scheduled her follow-up surgery for stone removal, which spoke to his commitment to the highest quality care in that moment.
"What sets Dr. Sidhu apart is how present and intentional he is. He listens carefully, never rushes and always makes sure I understand my options. Most recently, before surgery, he came in fully prepared, knowing my history in detail, and took the time to walk us through the plan. He has a way of making me feel like I am his only patient."
Women — A Rarity in Urology
Kidney stones are significantly more common in men than in women. In fact, men are nearly twice as likely to develop kidney stones during their lifetime. That’s what makes Michelle’s experience so unusual — and so relentless. While many people may face a kidney stone once, Michelle has battled recurring stones for years, enduring a cycle of pain, procedures and recovery that few women ever experience.
"As a woman in a specialty that often sees more male patients, I have always appreciated that Dr. Sidhu treats my concerns with complete respect and seriousness. I have never felt dismissed — only supported."
A Series of Healing Procedures
Michelle had the stent placement the same evening she was admitted. With successful placement, she went home the next day on April 7.
"The procedure was relatively quick and just under an hour. My overnight stay at WakeMed North was comfortable, and I was happy I was progressing toward recovery."
The stent, while helpful in Michelle's recovery, was quite uncomfortable.
"He knew how much I wanted the stent removed. Because of my results, he was able to move my surgery up several days so the stone could be removed sooner. I adjusted my schedule immediately to take that opportunity."
Dr. Sidhu performed her kidney stone removal and initial stent on April 13 at WakeMed Raleigh Medical Park Capital City Surgery Center.
Michelle recalls, "I had the second procedure as an outpatient. The procedure was, again, under an hour. I remained for several hours and went home the same day. We discussed the possibility of placing a new stent that I could remove at home, depending on inflammation. He understood my preference and was able to place one that I could remove myself, avoiding another office visit. That level of attentiveness truly reinforced how much he cares about his patients beyond the procedure itself."
On the day of the stone removal surgery, Dr. Sidhu asked if Michelle had any questions.
"One question I had was about an X-ray from several years ago regarding my right kidney. While standing at my bedside, he pulled up my records, compared the older X-ray with the one from the previous week and told me he had no concerns based on the most recent results."
Days later, Michelle was able to remove her stent.
"Once the stone and stent were removed, the relief was almost immediate. I am doing well today. In a time when trust in the medical field can feel uncertain, Dr. Sidhu stands out as a physician of the highest caliber. He is knowledgeable, compassionate and the epitome of professionalism. I am incredibly grateful to be under his care, and WakeMed is lucky to have him on their team."
Michelle's Life Today
Michelle continues to follow up with Dr. Sidhu for routine imaging, including X-rays and ultrasounds, along with annual visits to monitor her health. She has also joyfully returned to her active lifestyle.
"Before surgery, the acute pain made it difficult to focus on daily activities. The stent also created constant discomfort and the need to stay close to a restroom, which was very limiting. Since treatment, I’ve been able to return to my normal routine without that disruption."
