About Me

Philip O’Brate is a physician assistant with clinical interests founded in general surgery — a passion fostered at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA — following his completion of his master’s degree at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Since this training, he’s still pretty capable with a nasogastric (NG) tube or wound — though his best days as a first-assist in surgery are behind him. In expanding his role, O’Brate is now passionate about hospital medicine and could not imagine doing anything else. Additionally, he holds a collaborative institutional training initiative certification, previously managing a project in congestive heart failure (CHF) inpatient education in his former position at Duke Regional. This project involved creating CHF education for all inpatients with either CHF exacerbation or a new diagnosis of CHF — utilizing an already existing resource with virtual nursing while looking to reduce length of stay and readmission rates.

O’Brate’s patient care philosophy starts with a deep appreciation for his role on the patient care team, which also includes nurses, nurse aides, case managers, therapists and consultants. When with patients and their families (caregivers), he strives to build meaningful relationships by employing empathy and clear communication. He frames their hospital stay, exploring what made them seek medical support and how the team is going to deliver expert care.

When not seeing patients, O’Brate enjoys traveling abroad with his wife and little ones, cooking, watching Boston professional sports teams (sorry — not sorry Hurricanes fans) and listening to music.
