About Me

Dr. Mark Piehl is a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric intensivist who served as medical director of WakeMed Children's Hospital from 2009 to 2015.  He is a clinical associate professor of pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine.

He received his medical degree with honors from the UNC School of Medicine and his master's degree in public health from the UNC School of Public Health. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He also earned a Zertifikat Deutsch (an internationally recognized exam of German language ability) from the Goethe Institut and studied at the University of Würzburg in Germany. He holds a bachelor's degree in German from Davidson College.

Dr. Piehl is certified in pediatrics, with a subspecialty certification in pediatric critical care. He also holds certifications in pediatric advanced life support, which he instructs, as well as advanced trauma life support. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as a member of the North Carolina Pediatric Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
