About Me

Malyssa Chanthasoto is a board-certified physician assistant with a deep-rooted passion for orthopaedics, shaped by her own experiences with scoliosis and competitive soccer. Having worn a back brace for five years as a child, she was inspired by the first physician assistant who helped her straighten her spine. Her athletic journey, which included playing soccer at the Division III level, exposed her to various sports injuries, further fueling her interest in orthopaedics. She completed her undergraduate degree at SUNY Buffalo State in Buffalo, NY. She then earned her master’s degree through University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT.

Most recently, Chanthasoto has developed a special interest in trauma, joint replacement (arthroplasty) and, of course, sports medicine. She maintains her love for general orthopaedics and as a lifelong learner, is excited to continue growing her skills and knowledge at WakeMed.

Chanthasoto is a very direct and honest provider. This makes her more approachable and relatable to patients since she realizes that both patients and health care providers share the same human experience. That in mind, she strives to do what she believes is in the best interest of her patients and individualizes her approach, realizing that treatment is never a one-size-fits-all situation. She collaborates with patients to advance treatment options that align with patients’ concerns and desires. One of her daily phrases is, “I don’t treat the X-ray. I treat the patient.”

Most of her free time is spent staying active through HIIT workouts at the gym as well as hiking, snowboarding and exploring the outdoors. She also enjoys time with her dog (Chester), friends and family. In the winter, you’ll find her either snowboarding or cuddled indoors with her dog, Chester. Another passion is traveling and exploring new cities and cuisines. Chanthasoto lives by the adage that life is too short not to see the world or try a new dish!
