Karen Chilton, MD

Dr. Karen Chilton is the senior vice president, chief quality officer for WakeMed and chief medical officer of WakeMed Children’s as well as a practicing pediatric hospitalist. She joined WakeMed in 2004. Previous leadership roles include medical director for WakeMed Physician Practices Pediatric Critical Care and Hospital Medicine as well as interim chief quality officer for the system.

As chief quality officer of WakeMed, Dr. Chilton’s responsibilities include the health system’s departments of quality/patient safety, accreditation, risk management, infection prevention, clinical process improvement, the Kaizen promotion office and patient/family experience. She has successfully led many quality initiatives around identified system opportunities using a multi-disciplinary, collaborative approach.

She is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, PA and completed her pediatric residency training at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC.
