About Me
Joshua Herb is a board-certified, fellowship-trained surgical oncologist and is board-eligible in complex general surgical oncology by the American Board of Surgery. His clinical interests span a broad range of benign and cancerous tumors of the abdomen. These include tumors of the stomach, liver, pancreas, small intestines, adrenal gland, retroperitoneum, and peritoneal lining. He also treats complex skin and soft tissue cancers such as melanoma and sarcoma. Dr. Herb completed his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia College of Arts and Sciences in Charlottesville, VA. He then remained there to attend medical school at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He relocated to North Carolina for his residency in general surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After his time in Chapel Hill, he completed a surgery fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas — one of the nation’s top cancer centers.
During his residency, he earned a master’s degree in clinical research through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health. He also completed a research fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. He has numerous publications, presentations and professional memberships to his credit.
Dr. Herb’s patient care philosophy is to treat patients the way he would want his own family to be treated. A cancer diagnosis is scary, and he knows that his job is to help patients understand the diagnosis and the treatment options. He believes patients deserve honesty and clarity, so they know what to expect and can make the decisions that feel right for them. His focus is on providing the best possible surgical care to help patients feel supported and never alone when dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Herb enjoys spending time with his wife and dog. Together, they love to travel and spend time outdoors. They also consider themselves "foodies" and regularly seek out new foods and restaurants.
