About Me

Dr. Joseph Salfity is a vascular surgeon, treating patients in Raleigh, NC, and who specializes in carotid artery disease, abdominal aortic pathology, and peripheral vascular disease. He has unique experience in minimizing stroke risk in the treatment of carotid artery disease though transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR). He performs endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (EVAR) as well as open repairs for patients who are not candidates for minimally invasive approaches. He is passionate about working with vascular patients to develop treatment plans that improve their quality of life.

Dr. Salfity grew up in central Indiana and studied biology at Wabash College, graduating with high honors in 2006. He worked with Eli Lilly and Company and obtained his masters from the Purdue University School of Science in 2007. During medical school at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Salfity was an active fundraiser and President of Philanthropy for the Rock for Riley annual concert series benefiting Riley Hospital for Children. Medical school was also where he met his wife, and together they traveled to Vietnam where they established educational partnerships and provided health care to underserved communities.

Dr. Salfity pursued a residency in General Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine, serving as Administrative Chief resident in his fifth year. During his residency, he served on the Resident Executive Committee, the Program Evaluation Committee, and the Resident Selection Committee. Following a passion for the care of vascular patients, Dr. Salfity completed a Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He has presented on topics including the optimization of inpatient vascular care and the utilization of restrictive transfusion practices in vascular surgery. Dr. Salfity collaborated with Dr. Gary Lemmon to co-author “Recognition and Management of Late Type III Endoleaks,” which appears as a chapter in Current Vascular Surgery: 42nd Northwestern Vascular Symposium.

Dr. Salfity believes in a patient centered practice. He engages with his patients to illustrate how various medical conditions relate to their overall vascular health. His collaborative approach incorporates the patient’s priorities in developing both individualized and comprehensive treatment plans, which include healthy lifestyle choices, medical treatments, minimally invasive procedures, and conventional surgery.

In his free time, Dr. Salfity enjoys spending time with his wife and son, doing photography, and traveling internationally.
