About Me

Dr. Villanueva is a board-certified general surgeon whose clinical interests include advanced laparoscopic and DaVinci surgical robot-assisted techniques in all areas of gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric weight loss surgery, and minimally invasive hernia surgery.

Dr. Villanueva specializes in minimally invasive surgery as it is potentially less painful and often allows for a faster recovery than traditional surgical techniques. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas – Medical School at Houston and did his general surgery training at Loyola University Medical Center. He then completed advanced fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center.

He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

Compared to other institutions, I feel the doctors and providers at Wake Med LISTEN better, to their patients. Dr. Villanueva didn’t interrupt or talk over me, or ignore my concerns. He discussed everything in great detail so I’d better understand, and was very helpful with answering some of my more common sense questions without making me feel silly. I definitely trust him as a surgeon and am glad he was recommended to me by a friend!

All office staff were great both times I have been in the office as well as answering questions via other methods. I was even lucky enough to be in the office the first day the masking requirement was lifted! Yay no masks! Loved seeing peoples smiling faces!

All of the staff from my first meeting with Stacy, all office staff , Trish, psychologist, exercise specialist, Dr V, day of surgery check in , pre op team , anesthesia, recovery, the floor day and night were superb!!!! Excellent, Excellent! I was really hesitant about this surgery in tbt beginning as it can kinda be embarrassing- but My care team made me feel empowered and exceptional every step of the way! Each time I met someone new in the process I felt more confident and prepared ! I am a nurse soon to be FNP I am going to recommend wakemed to anyone thinking of having this surgery ! I could not be more satisfied with my experience!! Dr V is wonderful, confident, friendly surgeon ! I feel lucky to have gotten him - Thanks scheduler ! Lol - he was wonderful too !!!!
