About Me
Dr. Brian Cohen is a fellowship-trained thoracic surgeon who practices the full breadth of general thoracic surgery with a focus on minimally invasive techniques using the robotic platform. He has a particular interest in treating lung cancer, including developing early detection programs and working with a multidisciplinary team to implement comprehensive treatment plans.
Dr. Cohen has extensive education that began at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. He then attended medical school at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, NY, before completing his general surgery training at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. While there, he completed a research fellowship in cardiac surgery outcomes at MedStar-Georgetown Surgical Outcomes Research Center. He then went on to his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY, where he focused on thoracic surgery and minimally invasive techniques. This experience, he eagerly brings to his patients at WakeMed.
Dr. Cohen’s patient care philosophy involves listening to patients to develop a relationship built on open communication and trust. With a commitment to treating each patient with empathy and respect, Dr. Cohen combines compassionate care with advanced surgical expertise to ensure the best possible outcomes tailored to his patients’ needs, while focusing on getting them back to what's important in their lives.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Cohen stays active with his wife and three boys, enjoying the outdoors and exploring nearby sites. He also has a background in art and remains engaged in drawing, printmaking and woodworking.
