Brandon Rubens, MD

Born and raised in Chicago, Dr. Rubens credits his father, a psychiatrist, with helping him develop an interest in medicine. He also suffered a blocked kidney while in high school, and after undergoing kidney surgery, Dr. Rubens experienced urology first-hand. His curiosity about the field continued to grow from there. While in medical school at Loyola University near Chicago, Dr. Rubens was drawn to the variety of options presented by urology, including working with patients in an office-based setting, surgery and the medical management of more complicated conditions.

After completing general surgery and urology residencies at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan, Dr. Rubens went on to become a board-certified urologist. He has more than a decade of experience in the hospital and private practice setting. As a practicing urologist since 2006, urologic cancers have been a large part of the care Dr. Rubens has provided. This includes minimally invasive robotic/laparoscopic surgery.  With a special interest in prostate cancer, bladder cancer and kidney cancer, he works with his patients and their families to determine the best, most individualized treatment plans.  Different cancers require different management, and he discusses risks, benefits, pros and cons of each option to find a treatment that best suits the needs of each patient. In addition, Dr. Rubens also has clinical expertise in general urology, including prostate enlargement, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, blood in the urine and kidney stones. He is a seasoned presenter on general urology topics and has also performed much research on the different methods for treating prostate cancer.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Rubens enjoys spending time with his family – his wife and twin sons. He makes it a priority to stay active and has practiced yoga for many years. Skiing and sailing are also among his favorite pastimes.
