About Me
Dr. Ashish B. Patel is a board-certified cardiac electrophysiologist who currently is the medical director of electrophysiology at WakeMed. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Brown University in Providence, RI. He then continued to work for various organizations including the United Nations in the areas of International Health and Epidemiology. He completed his medical training at New York Medical College where he also obtained a master's in public health.
Dr. Patel completed his internal medicine residency at the Albert Einstein School of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center. He then completed his training in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at New York University Medical Center.
Dr. Patel is trained in the most advanced techniques in invasive cardiac electrophysiology, including catheter-based ablations for arrhythmias — ranging from atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia to ventricular tachycardia. His focus on heart rhythm disorders includes the treatment of syncope, inherited arrhythmias, congestive heart failure and the prevention sudden cardiac death. He specializes in the implantation of pacemakers, cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) and biventricular devices. Dr. Patel also has expertise in the area of left atrial appendage closure with the Amulet, Watchman and Lariat systems. He performs nearly all of his ablations with zero fluoroscopy, which eliminates radiation exposure to patients.
Dr. Patel is actively involved in research in the field of heart rhythm disorders. He has authored manuscripts describing the mechanisms of atrial fibrillation in experimental models as well as presented his clinical research at numerous national and international meetings since 2007. Dr. Patel has been the principle investigator in numerous multicenter international clinical trials in the area of new technology for catheter ablation as well as pacemakers. He serves as a national proctor for left atrial appendage closure and zero fluoroscopy ablation where he teaches physicians around the country.
Prior to joining WakeMed, he was the director for new technology at Hackenesack Meridian Jersey Shore Medical Center, as well as serving as both the assistant program for the Cardiology Fellowship and core assistant professor at Seton Hall School of Medicine. Dr. Patel was selected as one of New Jersey's "Top Docs," annually, from 2013 to 2018.
He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular diseases and Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and Heart Rhythm Society.
He enjoys traveling with his family and training his dog.
