RALEIGH, N.C. (April 4, 2024) – The Lown Institute, a healthcare think tank, recently released its 2024 Fair Share Spending report. This fourth annual report is an independent analysis of nonprofit hospitals' community investments, and highlights hospitals that go above and beyond in giving back to their communities.

The WakeMed health system was recognized as a top system for Fair Share Spending— a measure of how much a hospital gives back to its community. This is notable, as the majority of hospitals in Lown's report did not meet their obligations as nonprofits. All three WakeMed hospitals are among only 20% of hospitals nationwide to meet – or exceed – their obligation for community investment. Data from WakeMed Raleigh Campus and WakeMed North Hospital, which operates under the Raleigh Campus license, were combined for this performance ranking.

The Lown Institute’s 2024-25 fair share spending analysis of 2,425 nonprofit hospitals found that only 20% had a fair share surplus, meaning that a hospital’s spending on its community exceeded the value of its tax exemption. All hospitals and systems that had a fair share surplus are considered Top Hospitals/Systems by the Lown Institute.
