About Me
Dr. Matthew Lyons specializes in minimally invasive and advanced robotic surgery for the treatment of prostate and kidney cancer, as well as benign prostate enlargement. He also specializes in minimally invasive surgery for the management of male urinary symptoms related to enlarged prostate and urinary stone disease. Additionally, he specializes in the management of men’s health issues such as erectile dysfunction, low testosterone and Peyronie’s disease.
Dr. Lyons performs over 70 robotic cases per year (over 300 cases since starting at WakeMed) and is one of the highest volume robotic surgeons for prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Wake County. He is proud to have helped establish the urologic robotic surgery program at WakeMed North Hospital.
He is an active participant in the Wake County genitourinary (GU) oncology tumor board, which allows for a state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary approach to cancer treatment and collaboration with Duke and WakeMed medical oncologists, radiologists and radiation oncologists. This allows his patients access to cutting-edge cancer care right here in Wake County.
In addition to cancer care, Dr. Lyons specializes in several minimally invasive techniques for the management of male urinary symptoms related to enlarged prostate. Specifically, he specializes in Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy, the UroLift® System as well as laser transurethral resection of the prostate and robotic simple prostatectomy. He is committed to personalized care for patients with BPH and working to find the treatment modality that aligns with their symptoms and lifestyle goals.
Additionally, Dr. Lyons performs minimally invasive, no-scalpel vasectomy.
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Lyons continued his training by completing an internship in general surgery and a residency in urology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Lyons has published numerous research documents and abstracts on a wide range of urologic diseases and has presented his work at national and international meetings. Dr. Lyons is also an adjunct assistant professor of Urology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as Campbell Medical School. He currently serves as the Director of Medical Education for WPP Urology.
Dr. Lyons has a passion for quality improvement and has led projects aimed at alleviating the impact of the opioid crisis in Wake County. He has worked with WakeMed to decrease the number of opioid prescriptions for urologic surgery by nearly 50 percent, while establishing effective, opioid-free pain regimens to help patients recover safely and comfortably without having to worry about the risk of addiction and preventing the flow of unused opioid prescriptions into our community.
In 2024, Dr. Lyons was honored to receive the Pyramid Society Award for teamwork and leadership. This award is the highest honor given at WakeMed.
Dr. Lyons enjoys spending time with his family and his golden retriever, "Ned," in addition to cheering on the Hurricanes and Tar Heels.
