Heartbeats are regulated by a complex electrical conduction system that controls each beat by sending an electrical message to cells within the heart, causing the muscles to contract.

Working with your cardiologist, we can pinpoint problems with your heart’s electrical system. Of course, we offer many corrective treatments – most are minimally invasive procedures – that will help return a normal rhythm to your heart and your life.

Our electrophysiology labs are located in the WakeMed Heart Center on the Raleigh Campus and WakeMed Cary Hospital. These fully equipped labs offer the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the evaluation and treatment of conditions related to your heart’s electrical conduction system.

When you have suspected rhythm problem, we start with an EP study, which uses electrode catheters to help determine the cause of your irregular heartbeat. These studies also provide information on the severity of the problem that will help your cardiologist develop the best treatments for you, including:

Implantable Devices

Pacemakers, used to control heart rhythm, are inserted in the EP lab under conscious sedation. WakeMed physicians implant single, dual and biventricular pacemakers. We also insert defibrillators, which are pacemakers that can shock your heart back into a normal rhythm if you have an event. Specific implantable device services:
