WENDELL, N.C. (December 5, 2022)WakeMed, the leading provider of health care in Wake County, has officially broken ground on its full-service emergency department in Wendell Falls, one of the largest master-planned communities in the Triangle.

WakeMed Wendell Healthplex, slated to open in early 2024, will be the health system’s eighth emergency department. Based at Wendell Falls on 2021 Wendell Valley Boulevard, the building will feature a 12-bed emergency department as well as outpatient lab and imaging services. The 24,000-square-foot facility is being constructed on a nearly 11-acre site purchased by WakeMed, offering the potential for future expansion of a second facility for medical offices and other health services.

“As a vibrant, growing community, Wendell Falls offers a wonderful opportunity to expand WakeMed’s footprint,” said Carolyn Knaup, WakeMed senior vice president, Strategic Ventures & Ambulatory Operations. “We look forward to bringing exceptional care and services to the residents and families of Wendell Falls and the surrounding area.”

Wendell is the Triangle’s fastest-growing town, and more than 1,560 homeowners currently live in Wendell Falls – with thousands more to come. An estimated 14,000 patients are expected to receive treatment in the WakeMed Wendell Healthplex Emergency Department during its first year.

“From the original planning phases of Wendell Falls, we always knew that we wanted our residents to have access to quality healthcare services right here in the community,” said Tanya Matzen, vice president of operations, Brookfield Properties. “We are thrilled that our partnership with WakeMed is coming to fruition with the 2024 opening of the WakeMed Wendell Healthplex.”

WakeMed joins the growing commercial and retail offerings located along Wendell Falls Parkway and Treelight Square at Wendell Falls, including KinderCare Daycare, Publix, Cardinal Charter Academy, Farmhouse Cafe, Neuse River Veterinary Hospital, Cruizers Convenience Marketplace, Wendell Falls Fire & EMS, and many more.
