RALEIGH, N.C. (May 31, 2023) – WakeMed is pleased to announce a nationally-recognized ally in our journey to transform care for those in need of mental health and well-being services in our community and beyond. WakeMed officials recently signed an agreement with Sheppard Pratt to help develop and ultimately manage the day-to-day operations of WakeMed’s planned 150-bed mental health and well-being inpatient facility.

Sheppard Pratt is a private, nonprofit organization based in Maryland that has been a leading provider of psychiatric services since 1853. Each year, Sheppard Pratt providers serve more than 70,000 individuals from 34 states and 15 countries through their 160 inpatient, outpatient, housing, education and job-training programs, among others. Sheppard Pratt Solutions is the division of their organization that provides management services, consulting, and facility/program development services.

“Right now, there is as big of a need for mental health and well-being services in our community as there has ever been, and the need will only continue to grow without innovative solutions,” says Donald Gintzig, WakeMed president & CEO. “It’s WakeMed’s vision to be the preferred partner for quality care and health through collaboration and transformation of care delivery. I can think of no better partner in our efforts to build a world-class mental health and well-being hospital and innovative model of mental health care than a world-class organization that shares our mission and vision and has years of experience in the field. Sheppard Pratt will help us transform care – not just for our community but for adults and children across the region who deserve access to high-quality mental health and well-being services.”

U.S. News & World Report has ranked Sheppard Pratt among the top psychiatric hospitals in the nation for more than 30 years. Their patient- and community-focused mission and nonprofit status complement WakeMed’s mission and values.

“We are pleased to partner with WakeMed on this exciting project and extend Sheppard Pratt’s knowledge and clinical expertise in behavioral health to serve the Triangle,” says Harsh K. Trivedi, MD, MBA. “Across the nation, the need for behavioral health services is tremendous and rapidly growing. Sheppard Pratt Solutions shares its expertise with health systems to help fill that gap, with a shared commitment to adding or enhancing behavioral health services in communities for the growing number of people who need care.”

The mental health and well-being hospital and the planned 45-bed acute care hospital – WakeMed Garner Hospital – will comprise WakeMed’s new campus dedicated to whole-person health.

The campus will be on approximately 53 acres near the intersection of White Oak Road and Timber Drive East in Garner, N.C. It will be an integral part of a 220-acre mixed-use district focused on innovation and wellness, which is being planned by the Town of Garner and a developer.
