WakeMed Cary Hospital Named a Top U.S. Hospital by The Leapfrog Group for 2021

WakeMed Cary Hospital was recently named of the nation’s top hospitals by The Leapfrog Group. More than 2,200 hospitals were considered for the 2021 Top Hospital award program, and 149 were selected for this distinguished award. WakeMed Cary Hospital is one of only 46 U.S. hospitals to take home the honor for the “General” top hospital category (four available categories: General, Teaching, Rural and Children’s). This recognition reflects the commitment of our staff and providers to deliver high-quality care and improve patient safety.

2021 has been a great year of expansion and achievements for WakeMed Cary Hospital, allowing us to better serve and meet the health needs of growing communities and families across southern and western Wake County. Next week marks another significant milestone in its history – the 30th anniversary since WakeMed Cary Hospital first opened its doors on December 16, 1991.

The Leapfrog Group considers the quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, surgery, maternity care and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication and other errors. Hospitals honored in the General category must meet Leapfrog’s standard for a variety of measures, including Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), ICU physician staffing, high risk surgeries and procedures, and more. Additionally, eligible hospitals must complete the annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey and have earned an A on the most recently reported Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. All three WakeMed hospitals earned A ratings from The Leapfrog Group on its the latest Hospital Safety Grades (Fall 2021).
