RALEIGH, N.C. (May 10, 2022) – We are pleased to announce that Raleigh Campus, Cary Hospital and North Hospital have once again received A’s on the latest Hospital Safety Grades, which were released today by The Leapfrog Group. These scores mirror the A’s we received in the fall and place our facilities in elite company: only 33% of hospitals nationwide received A’s in this round of scores.

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization that works to initiate improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for all citizens by promoting transparency and value-based hospital incentives. The group publishes Hospital Safety Grades twice a year based on information reported from government agencies and other sources. This program focuses exclusively on safety (accidents, injuries and errors).

“This is a great accomplishment – and one that all members of our WakeMed team should be incredibly proud of! We have been making great improvements in many areas related to quality, safety and service – and these repeat A’s reflect our team’s commitment to going above and beyond for our patients,” commented Karen Chilton, MD, Associate Chief Quality Officer. “I look forward to working with our multidisciplinary teams as we keep building on this momentum and working toward even better outcomes for our patients.”

The spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades are based on performance against 22 metrics –12 of which are related to processes and 10 related to outcomes. The raw scores for all three WakeMed hospitals increased since last fall.

WakeMed traditionally excels in the metrics related to processes, and this spring is no different. High scores on these metrics indicate we have a strong culture of safety and procedures that engage staff and leaders. Since last fall, we saw across-the-board improvements in the measures related to HCAHPS scores, with the exception of staff responsiveness, which dropped somewhat at all three hospitals. Cary Hospital saw a notable increase in communication about medications, which has been a focus area for the past year. We also saw very slight decreases in several of the measures related to outcomes, including CAUTI, CLABSI and surgical site infections. Falls and trauma, C. diff and MRSA improved slightly or did not change since last fall.
