RALEIGH, N.C. (June 17, 2022) – WakeMed Health & Hospitals recently honored Travis Honeycutt, MD, with the prestigious Harry E. Dascomb, MD, Award. WakeMed’s highest teaching honor, the Dascomb Award is presented annually to a physician who demonstrates excellence in teaching of medical students and residents and patient care.

Dr. Honeycutt is a board-certified pediatrician who has been with WakeMed Physician Practices – Pediatrics since 2006, specializing in pediatric intensive care and inpatient pediatrics. He has previous experience with the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Division of Community Pediatrics, where he was clinical instructor of pediatrics, and he also served as a pediatrician for Wilmington Health Associates' Children's Clinic.

He was nominated by his peers and selected by the Dascomb Award committee, which includes doctors from WakeMed Physician Practices and community-based physicians. In a nomination form, Dr. Honeycutt is described as “a role model in our group and an enthusiastic and patient teacher, always taking the time to teach all members of the care team in a very inclusive and non-threatening manner.”

Dr. Honeycutt leads the monthly multidisciplinary journal club for pediatricians and is an enthusiastic teacher of point-of-care ultrasound. He has been recognized by residents and medical students on numerous occasions via evaluations and has received the UNC pediatric residency teaching award for being an outstanding teacher and clinician. As one peer noted, “He leads in such a humble way. He himself is a great student. I know WakeMed Children’s couldn’t be close to what it is today without his leadership and educator skills.”

Harry Dascomb, MD, served as an infectious disease physician at WakeMed who was recognized for his bedside clinical and teaching skills and for his ability to provide compassionate patient care. The Harry E. Dascomb, MD, Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching and Care was established in his honor. Recipients must demonstrate support of clinical teaching programs at WakeMed over at least three years.
