RALEIGH, N.C. (July 18, 2023) – WakeMed is pleased to honor Angela Gantt, MD, FACOG, with the prestigious Harry E. Dascomb, MD, Award. The Dascomb Award — WakeMed’s highest teaching honor — is presented annually to a physician who demonstrates excellence in patient care as well as through teaching medical students and residents.

Dr. Gantt is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist who has been with WakeMed Obstetrics & Gynecology since 2006. In addition to providing clinical care, Dr. Gantt serves as the executive medical director for Women’s Services within WakeMed Physician Practices. She has also served as Chair of the WakeMed OB-GYN Department and as an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of OB-GYN since 2008. She is a prior recipient of the WakeMed OB-GYN Teaching Attending Award.

She was nominated by her peers and selected by the Dascomb Award committee, which includes doctors from WakeMed Physician Practices and community-based physicians. In one nomination, Dr. Gantt is described as, “an excellent educator who continues to serve as an inspiration to medical students, residents, and her colleagues, but she is someone with a deep commitment to caring for ALL patients, those with means and those who have no resources.”

The Harry E. Dascomb, MD, Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching and Care was established in honor of Dr. Dascomb, who served as an infectious disease physician at WakeMed. He was known and appreciated for his bedside, clinical, and teaching skills as well as his ability to provide compassionate patient care. Recipients must demonstrate support of clinical teaching programs at WakeMed over at least three years.

Dr. Gantt received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Ohio State University and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Research fellowship at UNC.
