RALEIGH, N.C. (December 27, 2023) — Following months of complex negotiations and diligent work on both sides, WakeMed and Aetna have signed a new, long-term contract that will ensure Aetna’s Commercial and Medicare Advantage members continued in-network access to WakeMed’s growing network of providers in 2024 and beyond.

The renewal agreement includes all WakeMed hospitals, outpatient clinics, and specialty care physicians. WakeMed Primary Care providers remain in-network under a separate contract. The contract also includes a value-based, outcomes-driven program designed to drive improvements in value for the benefit of patients, the health system and Aetna.

“Ensuring our community has access to the high quality and affordable care they need is always our priority. This new contract allows us to continue fulfilling our mission of improving the health and well-being of all those we serve,” said Stephanie Sessoms, Senior Vice President, interim Chief Financial Officer at WakeMed. “We value our working relationship with Aetna and are pleased that this new agreement will support long-term access for the many commercial and Medicare Advantage plan members who know and trust WakeMed as their health care provider.”

WakeMed proudly contracts with a wide variety of managed care plans and insurance companies, while also participating in the government programs of Medicare and Medicaid. For more information about insurance programs we participate in, please see the Insurance We Accept page.
