How Much Will My Treatment Cost?

We understand the cost of health care is important. WakeMed can provide estimates to help inform your decisions.

Before you begin, here are a few important things to know about estimates at WakeMed.

  1. We strive for accuracy, but actual costs may vary.
  2. Estimates include:
    • Professional fees (doctor/APP/caregiver)
    • Facility fees (hospital, nursing, etc.)
  3. Complete estimates (professional + facility fees) are only available for care:
    • Provided at a WakeMed facility AND
    • Delivered by WakeMed-employed caregivers
  4. Partial estimates may apply when:
    • Care is provided by non-WakeMed-employed caregivers (e.g., emergency, anesthesia, radiology interpretation, pathology providers)
    • Care is delivered in facilities not fully owned by WakeMed (e.g., certain ambulatory surgery centers)
  5. Uninsured patients or patients paying out-of-pocket have the legal right to receive a  Good Faith Estimate.

  • Check with your insurance to verify your expected out-of-pocket cost.
  • Ask about missing costs like labs, anesthesia or out-of-network providers.
  • Request a revised estimate if anything is updated.

Estimates aren’t final bills — you have the right to ask questions and get clarity.

Estimates are best approximations for the cost of care, but each patient is different and needs may change during treatment. This means that estimates are not guaranteed to match the final cost of care.

If your bill does not match your estimate, and you have questions, here are a few steps you may want to take.

  • Compare the estimate and bill to spot differences in services or charges.
  • Call the provider’s billing team and ask for a detailed review.
  • Check your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from your insurer.
  • Learn about added or separate fees (labs, anesthesia, out-of-network providers).

Of course, we are committed to ensuring billing accuracy and helping you understand your bill. If you have questions, please contact us by sending our billing customer service team a message in MyChart or call 919-350-8359.

Review general information about estimates.

If you’re uninsured or paying out-of-pocket, you will receive a Good Faith Estimate before scheduled care. (Learn more about Good Faith Estimates.)

We also do our best to provide an estimate for all patients prior to receiving care automatically. If you do not receive an estimate from us automatically, please do not hesitate to contact us directly by sending us a message in MyChart or calling 919-350-8359.

Health care billing is complicated and there are numerous things that may impact the accuracy of an estimate.

Some of these include:

  • Insurance details — deductible, coverage or network status changes
  • Unexpected services — additional tests, procedures or complications
  • Provider mix — out-of-network clinicians (e.g., anesthesia, lab, imaging)
  • Coding differences — final billing codes may vary from initial assumptions
  • Timing changes — benefits or eligibility may change before care is delivered

Bottom line: Estimates are based on expected care — actual costs may change if your treatment or coverage changes.

•    You’ll receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before your care
•    The estimate reflects self-pay pricing (often different from insurance rates)
•    It should include an itemized list of services and related costs
•    You may qualify for Medicaid or financial assistance programs that can lower your costs
•    Discounts and payment plans may also be available
•    If your final bill is $400+ higher than the estimate, you can dispute it
Bottom line: Without insurance, your estimate is more detailed and protected — and you may have options to reduce what you will owe.

Estimates are based on similar historical cases, but costs may vary depending on:

  • Exact procedure performed
  • Location of care
  • Changes in your condition or treatment plan
  • Anytime — you can ask for an estimate before scheduling or receiving care
  • At scheduling — providers often create estimates when your service is booked
  • Before planned services — especially for procedures, tests, or surgeries

If you’re uninsured or paying out-of-pocket, you’re entitled to a Good Faith Estimate:

  • When you schedule care at least 3 days in advance, or
  • If you request one, even before scheduling

Bottom line: You can request an estimate at any time—but the earlier you ask, the more accurate and helpful it will be.
