Sports & Camp Physicals

At WakeMed MyCare 365, we say, "Let the children play" — but not without first receiving a physical. As children prepare for school sports and summer camps, it is important that they are in the best health for these activities.

Sports Physical versus Annual Wellness Check

Student athletes and school-aged campers should, ideally, receive both the annual wellness check as well as a sports physical. The annual wellness check includes blood work and immunizations. It is more comprehensive. The sports physical does not replace the annual wellness check. It augments it. Unknown and underlying medical conditions could become medical emergencies if they suddenly present during a sporting event or while your child is playing in the hot sun during a camp activity. Schedule your child's physical with us. Like you, we want your child to safely enjoy all the fun of childhood.

Ask your child's coach or camp director to provide the sports physical forms. These forms change. Your child's school or camp should have the most up-to-date forms along with deadlines for submission. Be sure to fill out all documents prior to the appointment. Important questions about health history are asked and answers will prove critical to our evaluation.

What We Check in a Sports Physical

A sports physical will check the student athlete for the following:

  • Fitness (abdomen, heart, lungs, nose, throat)
  • Flexibility (range of motion)
  • Hearing
  • Joints (mobility, posture, strength)
  • Psychological development (maturity, mood, eating disorders/addictions, family dynamics)
  • Vision
  • Vitals (blood pressure, height, weight, growth spurts, temperature)

Our providers at WakeMed MyCare 365 may also offer guidance to help your athlete build a healthier body as well as determine nutritional needs for optimal performance.

Why It's Important to Establish a Long-term Relationship

At WakeMed MyCare 365, we offer primary care services for early elementary children through adults. We want to be your first choice for all your primary and urgent care needs.

Our desire is to establish a long-term relationship with you and your family, and that holds true for the sports physical as well.

If you are bringing in your student athlete or camper for a sports physical as a new patient, we welcome you and ask that, prior to the sports physical, you consider transferring your child’s medical records, so we have the complete health history to offer the most thorough exam.
