For each visit, you need to bring:

  • List of all medicines, vitamins and supplements you are currently taking with dosage
  • Any medical records, not obtained during the scheduling process, that may need to be reviewed
  • Photo ID
  • Insurance cards
  • A friend or family member, if possible
  • A list of questions to ask your care team

WakeMed participates with a wide variety of managed care plans and insurance companies, while also participating in the government programs of Medicare and Medicaid. Prior to your visit, check with your insurance company to see if you have access to health care services at WakeMed, and to determine if pre-certification or a second opinion is required. Otherwise, you may be responsible for all or a large portion of your bill.

You will be billed separately for the anesthesiologist’s, surgeon’s and radiologist’s services, depending on the treatment you receive. Bring your complete health insurance information, including identification, insurance cards and authorization forms.

At the time of your visit, you may be asked to pay amounts not covered by your insurance such as co-pays, deductibles and coinsurance.

Co-payments for physician and hospital care and other balances you may owe are due on the day you receive services. Your insurance may also require you to pay for estimated coinsurance or deductibles related to your care. If you have multiple appointments, your insurance company may require multiple co-payments.

At WakeMed, we are committed to billing and pricing transparency and understand how overwhelming it can be to receive a bill for your cancer treatment — even when your care is covered by your insurance. Being familiar with the terms of your insurance coverage including your responsibilities related to notifying the insurance company about the services you need and or use can be helpful. We are also committed to caring for all individuals regardless of their ability to pay. We have dedicated teams available to discuss your insurance benefit coverage, estimates, and preservice authorization requirements as well as answer questions related to your bill, payment options and financial assistance.

For authorization support, estimates of financial responsibility, and prepayment arrangements, please contact our Financial Clearance Hematology and Oncology team at 919-350-2273, option 3.

For questions about your bill or if you would like to speak with someone about financial assistance, please contact our Patient Financial Services team at 919-350-8359.
