About Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Mission Statement

WakeMed’s Surgical Critical Care Fellowship program prepares surgical intensivists to deliver high-quality, timely care to critically ill patients. Through the practice of up-to-date, evidence-based medicine, fellows are trained across the entire breadth of surgical critical care to support the health and well-being of our community.

Our fellows will be exposed to a wide array of complex pathology, preparing them for the challenges they will face as independent physicians. We aim to train leaders who are prepared to serve as educators and role models by practicing the highest level of empathy and professionalism.

Fellows will develop their leadership and administrative skills through working with interdisciplinary teams which provide compassionate care without regard to the patient’s race, gender, sexual orientation, disability status or ability to pay.

Opportunities

Core rotations in the SICU, Neuro-ICU, MICU and CTSICU are available in addition to numerous electives. Fellows may purse opportunities in Emergency General Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Advanced Ultrasonography, Airway Management, Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) training and Pediatric Intensive Care.

Fellows will enhance their skills as key members of graduate medical interdisciplinary teams, consisting of general surgery residents, pharmacy residents, surgical physician assistant fellows and internal medicine residents.

In addition, fellows will have the unique opportunity to participate in clinical research activities, providing them with the most advanced access to scientific inquiry in the field.
