About Me

Dr. Villanueva is a board-certified general surgeon whose clinical interests include advanced laparoscopic and DaVinci surgical robot-assisted techniques in all areas of gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric weight loss surgery, and minimally invasive hernia surgery.

Dr. Villanueva specializes in minimally invasive surgery as it is potentially less painful and often allows for a faster recovery than traditional surgical techniques. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas – Medical School at Houston and did his general surgery training at Loyola University Medical Center. He then completed advanced fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center.

He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

Had emergency []. Scary not to know surgeon, facility, going through surgery. Well taken care of as inpatient in postpartum. Even though I was not their typical patient, staff were excellent! I am retired RN and good judge of wonderful care. Surgeon was outstanding. Was nervous as I was being put to sleep and one of the OR nurses held me. Thanks to all.

The teams overall interaction with me. Professional, caring and very clear in explaining what the issue was, how to treat it and what was next. Amazing from the front test to the Doctor. Never felt like I was just a number. They truly cared and wanted to help me in any way. Could not say enough about ALL of them. I am grateful to be able to get care a place like this on short notice.

The young lady that took my vitals was very thorough when taking my blood pressure. It seemed higher than usual and I asked her to please take it again but manually. She responded to my request with such kind understanding of my concern! I so appreciated that. But the time that the doctor spent explaining things in such a professional and yet personable manner was outstanding to me! He spoke to me with respect he didn’t speak down to me and I felt comfortable to ask questions him questions and I never felt rushed !

Compared to other institutions, I feel the doctors and providers at Wake Med LISTEN better, to their patients. Dr. Villanueva didn’t interrupt or talk over me, or ignore my concerns. He discussed everything in great detail so I’d better understand, and was very helpful with answering some of my more common sense questions without making me feel silly. I definitely trust him as a surgeon and am glad he was recommended to me by a friend!

All of the staff from my first meeting with Stacy, all office staff , Trish, psychologist, exercise specialist, Dr V, day of surgery check in , pre op team , anesthesia, recovery, the floor day and night were superb!!!! Excellent, Excellent! I was really hesitant about this surgery in tbt beginning as it can kinda be embarrassing- but My care team made me feel empowered and exceptional every step of the way! Each time I met someone new in the process I felt more confident and prepared ! I am a nurse soon to be FNP I am going to recommend wakemed to anyone thinking of having this surgery ! I could not be more satisfied with my experience!! Dr V is wonderful, confident, friendly surgeon ! I feel lucky to have gotten him - Thanks scheduler ! Lol - he was wonderful too !!!!
