Urinary Incontinence & Pelvic Pain

Don’t be embarrassed!  Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) such as urinary incontinence and pelvic pain associated with such issues as endometriosis or pelvic organ prolapse are very common.  But that doesn’t mean they are a normal part of aging.

Today, a wide variety of treatments for PFDs exist.  Many of these treatments are available through a physical therapist.  Our physical therapists can coordinate your treatment or work with your physician to ensure your success.  Some of the conditions our physical therapists treat include:

  • Urinary incontinence (all types)
  • Bladder spasms/contractions
  • Pain/urinary incontinence associated with pregnancy and childbirth
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Rectal/vaginal pain
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse)
  • Vulvodynia
  • Vulvar vestibulitis
  • Coccydynia
  • Vaginismus
  • Pelvic floor dyssnergia
  • Pudendal neuralgia
  • Levator Ani syndrome
  • Pelvic scarring

What Is Biofeedback?
Many bodily functions (breathing, blinking, etc.) are involuntary – you do them without realizing it.  Biofeedback is the practice of making yourself aware of these involuntary bodily functions and changing them using your mind to control them.

Education is the key component of treatment.  After a thorough discussion of your medical history and symptoms, your WakeMed physical therapist will determine the right therapies for you.  They have expertise in:

  • Teaching biofeedback
  • Manual therapies
  • Bladder retraining
  • Exercises to strengthen and/or relax muscles
  • Scar reduction
  • Pain management
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Facilitation of more ideal posture
