Flu is prevalent in our community right now. Visit our Flu Resource Center to learn about flu prevention, signs and symptoms, and help us protect our patients, families and staff from RSV and the flu by following these visitation restrictions.

  • No visitors under the age of 12 are allowed in patient care areas.
  • Please do not visit patients if you are experiencing fever, vomiting, diarrhea or cold or flu-like symptoms.

Volunteering as a college student can be a very valuable experience.  It enables you to give back to the community and learn more about the healthcare field.  We are glad you are considering a volunteer placement at WakeMed.

Requirements & Considerations Before Applying To Volunteer

  • Must be able to commit to 6 months of service
  • Formal recommendation and evaluation letters/forms can only be sumbitted to Volunteer Services to complete when 6 months service commitment has been met.  *Verification of volunteer hours can always be requested as needed on an on-going basis.
  • To be considered for other placement areas, you must volunteer a minimum of 6 months in your current placement.
  • Must be able to commit to a regularly weekly volunteer schedule for 2 to 4 hours
  • The hospital requires current immunizations for volunteers. This includes: MMR, Varicella Titer and two-step TB skin test. Hepatitis B series is recommended for patient care areas.
  • Must complete a FLU vaccine annually
  • Able to communicate well in English (second language skills are a plus).
  • Please be aware that we do not accept applications for court ordered community service hours.

  • Processing time for applications can take from 3 to 5 weeks
  • If you are actively seeking employment, we ask that you please wait to apply until you are established in your new job to ensure you know your schedule and can commit to 6 months of service
  • Please note: College students interested in volunteering during the summer (May - August) must apply in March to be considered and meet the following criteria:
    • Must be able to come in for scheduled interview by the 2nd week in April
    • Must be able to begin active service of volunteering no later than second week of June

Comprehensive testing, training and orientation are provided for each of our applicants. As a result we ask for a significant commitment from our volunteers.

To join our team, we ask you to:

  • Be willing to complete an in-person interview
  • Be willing and able to make a commitment to volunteer for a period of six months to one year
  • Be willing to submit to a criminal background check
  • Complete a two-step tuberculosis screening and medical screening
  • Complete an orientation packet
