Adult Volunteering


It takes a special person to be a volunteer, and we're glad that you've chosen to share your time and talents with the patients and staff at WakeMed. The time you spend here as a volunteer benefits the entire community. As a volunteer, your role is one of ambassador, liaison and educator for patients, families, visitors and the public.

Do You Meet Eligibility Requirements?

  • Must be 18 years or older. High school students must refer to Junior Volunteering.
  • If you are actively seeking employment, we ask that you please wait to apply until you are established in your new job to ensure you know your schedule and can commit to 6 months of service.
  • Apply for only one hospital location. (Additional hospital assignments can be added after starting)
  • MUST be able to commit to a minimum 6 months of service.
  • MUST be available to volunteer 1-day a week on a regular set day and time. (Limited weekend openings).
  • MUST be cleared by Occupational Health for:
  1. Flu vaccine — Annual requirement during flu season. Religious and medical exemptions are allowed if approved by Occupation Health. 
  2. Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine
  3. Chickenpox (Varicella) vaccine
  4. Tdap vaccine
  5. Tuberculosis (TB) Screening
  • ABLE to communicate well in English (second language skills are a plus).
  • WE do not accept applications for court ordered community service hours.
  • Volunteer Services is only able to provide verification of volunteer hours served. 
  • All applications are reviewed in full entirety and submission of an application does not guarantee placement. 
  • If you are interested in job shadowing opportunity or internship please email our Workforce Development department.
  • Processing time for applications can take 3- 5 weeks.

Comprehensive testing, training and orientation are provided for each of our applicants. As a result, we ask for a significant commitment from our volunteers.

To join our team, we ask you to:

  • Be willing to complete an in-person or virtual interview
  • Be willing and able to make a commitment to volunteer for a period of six months or more.
  • Be willing to complete a criminal background check
  • Complete all required medical screenings
  • Complete orientation 
  • Complete two references
